#5 Dean is Literally Just a Teenage Girl
Dean Winters as Teenage Girl
"Dean Winters as Teenage Girl" is an Allstate commercial that is trying to sell insurance by using the selfish and carless stereotype of teenage girls to show that even if you are a safe driver, other people can cause damage to your things. The commercial starts off with Dean Winters in a pink SUV texting his BFF, Becky. He says that he is upset because Becky just texted him that she kissed Jonny and Dean is mad because he liked Jonny. In his rage he throws his bedazzled phone in the back seat and hits another car in the parking lot before driving off. Then the owner of the car he hit comes out and sees that her car has been hit, but was too late to see who had done it.
There is definitely a humorous part of this commercial in the overdramatic playing of a teenage girl. The commercial pokes fun at the irrelevant things many teenagers worry about, like boys. I personally enjoyed the visual details, like the bedazzled phone and the pink sunglasses that match the pink car. While nothing about those things are exclusive to teenage girls, they are definitely things that you would see on younger people more than older people. Even if Dean had not directly stated that he was a teenage girl, it could have been inferred using those visual features.
The actual message of this ad is that you could end up with damages that are not your fault, so you need to have good insurance even if you are a safe driver. The owner of the car that got hit seemed like an average person, probaby living her life the same as most of the people watching that ad. There is not anything that stands out too much about her, she just comes out with all of her groceries and looks around after she sees what happened to her car. She is kept bland because she is meant to be who most of the audience relates to so that they can put themselves in her shoes and think "hmm, now what if that happened to me". The hope of the commercial is that this will make them consider buying the insurance.
Anyways I hope that you enjoyed looking at this silly advertisement today with me and thank you for reading my blog!
I found this ad very funny, I am glad you chose it! I also agree, the message of the advertisement seems to be that one can end up with damages that are not their fault and should have good insurance no matter what. the car and phone were also well implemented to depict a teenage girl.
