#7 We are Happy When Our Food is Happy

Fresh (2009) is a documentary that looks at farmers who are trying to move towards sustainable farming. It exposes some common occurrences in the farming industry that leave a foul feeling in your stomach. One particular occurrence that made uncomfortable was when one farmer said that he was promoted to feed dead cows to other cows. Not only are cows herbivores so they are not supposed to eat meat, but it actually lead to many cows getting a disease known as mad cow disease. This disease is a chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system and can take between four to six years to show symptoms. The farmer in the video has since stopped feeding dead cows to his living cows, but just being aware of the fact that some farmers do that made me really think. I personally am an avid burger enjoyer and every burger I have had since watching the film has been haunted with the thought of how the cow was raised, how it was feed, did the cow have a family? This film has definitely made me more aware of my food and where it is coming from.

I think it is important that we are aware of the issues in our agricultural system because the long term health effects are still going to impact us even if we are unaware. The more people that are aware of and upset with the food in America, the more pressure that will be put on the suppliers to get better quality for us. We should be taking care of our bodies and this film has really made me question if I am eating the best food to do that.

One thing this film reminded me of is that my family has chickens! We've had them for about eight years so they're too old to lay eggs now, but when they did we used to exclusively eat fresh eggs. We have gone back to store bought eggs now because we don't want to commit to chickens for the next eight years, but the difference in quality is between fresh and store bought eggs is beyond belief. Fresh eggs taste almost more nutritious and fulfilling than store bought eggs. High quality food undoubtedly pays off.

Thank you for reading and letting me share my thoughts on the film Fresh!

  1. I agree with you that we should be aware of the problem of sustainable agricultural development, because it is not only a problem of farmers, but also our responsibility as consumers, or as a member of society.
